Vermiculture

September of 2002, BARFARM ventured  into raising of goats with the objective of making available to farmers affordable upgraded breeding goats.  The initial 100-doe operation then has now turned into a viable goat breeding herd with 300 upgraded does and doelings. However, along with the rapid expansion of it’s breeding herd, came the inevitable daily waste which comes in the form of goat manure. It is for this reason that in January 2006, BARFARM has again further diversified it’s operation by going into Vermiculture and Vermicomposting with goat manure as sole substrate. Now, the big pile of goat manure that has been accumulated over the 4-year period is now being slowly turned into wormcastings and vermicompost.

Wormcastings and vermicompost, being the most nutrient-rich organic fertilizer among all other organic fertilizers available, is now being used as sole organic fertilizer in BARFARM’s diversified orchard operation as well as in it’s Plant Nursery operation. Recently, too, the Northern Mindanao Vermiculture Society has decided to make Halfway House, the produce-outlet and restaurant of BARFARM as it’s Headquarters where the Society meets regularly and where information, supplies of African Night Crawlers, worm castings and vermicompost are available at all times.
